Kentra can provide a COSHH training course, this course was developed by CIEH before their recent changes, we are currently reviewing the awarding body for this course. In the meantime we are still providing this course with our own certification.

Ratio   10 Candidates: 1 Instructor, Duration: 1 Day

Aim
To provide particular guidance on the requirements of COSHH Regulations and to provide practical solutions to specified problems.

Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002?

Under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulations 2002, regulation 12 states that ‘every employer who undertakes work which is liable to expose an employee to a substance hazardous to health shall provide that employee with suitable and sufficient information, instruction and training.’ Employees also have a legal responsibility to co-operate fully with their employer in order to enable them to meet their legal obligations.

Hazardous substances come in many different forms and types. Common forms of COSHH dangers include liquids, gases, mists and dust. This therefore means that the types of individual substances range from cleaning products to hydraulic fluid to brick dust, the list is endless. It is also important to remember that many COSHH risks not only come from substances used, but are also created as by-products of a process, for example dust from demolition work.

Many substances which would not pose a danger in small doses can be a danger to health in larger quantities, so the quantity as well as the type of substance also needs to be taken into consideration.

The extent to which the substances have an effect on health and well-being will vary too, ranging from mild irritants to highly toxic and deadly.

By providing effective COSHH training, employers can help to ensure that everyone in the workplace is competent to carry out their work safely. Managers, supervisors and other members of staff should be able to recognise the hazards of their work, be able to take action to reduce or eliminate the risks and understand how to follow procedures.

By the end of this program, all students should be able to:
Identify the hazards associated with those substances
Identify the risks and controls available to deal with the substances
Identify what to expect from a COSHH assessment

Course Content

This COSHH training course provides suitable training for all levels of employees who work, or may come into contact with hazardous substances in the workplace. All employees must have the necessary knowledge to be competent and do their job properly.

Are any Hazardous substances NOT covered by COSHH regulations?

COSHH regulations and legislation do not cover asbestos or lead. Whilst these are hazardous substances and do conform to the same criteria in terms of form such as dust and methods of getting into a person’s body, these substances are so high risk in low quantities that they have their own individual regulations
