Kentra provide training and assessments for a wide selection of Lift Trucks, including this Order Picker training course. We specialise in providing on-site training and this course is delivered using a mixture of both classroom based tutorial and practical machine operating, testing and a final course assessment.

Aims and Objectives
To provide the practical skills and the operating safety knowledge necessary for operators to correctly prepare, safely operate and maintain a Order picker as described in ACOP117.

Learning Outcomes
● To have a basic understanding of the dangers and their responsibilities as an operator
● To be able to locate and identify the major components and key controls of the machine and explain their functions
● Be able to locate and identify steering, driving and braking controls and explain their functions
● Conduct all pre-operational checks
● Safely mount and dismount the machine
● Start and stop the engine and safely move the machine off and stop it safely
● Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely laden and unladen, in open and confined spaces
● Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
● Manoeuvre the machine to the work area and correctly configure in readiness to carry our lifting and load handling tasks
● Carry out order picking tasks
● Transfer loads accurately and safely at different locations
● Fit, adjust and or remove attachments
● Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation
● Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

This course is designed for candidates of all abilities. We can assist candidates with any learning difficulties or where English may not be their first language, please mention when booking a course.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) state that for Lorry Mounted Lift Truck training course’s “It is important that employers ensure that lift-truck operators are trained to the standards outlined in the L117 ACOP, whether using in-house trainers or external training providers.

“Everyone at work needs to know how to work safely and without risks to health. The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 requires employers to provide their employees with information, instruction, training and supervision necessary to ensure, so far as is reasonable practicable, their health and safety at work . The self employed also have a duty, so far as is reasonably practicable, to ensure their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their work activities.

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 also specify situations where health and safety training is particularly important, e.g. when people start work. There are a number of other regulations with specific training requirements, e.g. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER98) specifies the need for training for people who use work equipment.”

Course Duration
The Order Picker training course ratios are
Novice: 1 Machine: 3 Candidates: 1 Instructor, Duration: 1  – 3 Days
Refresher and Test: 1 Machine: 3 Candidates: 1 Instructor, 1 Day
Experienced Worker Tests (EWT): 1 Machine: 4 Candidates: 1 Instructor, 1 Day

Course Content
● Responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER 1998, LOLER 1998 and other relevant legislation.
● Operators Safety Code
● Battery maintenance and charging procedures
● Pre-shift checks
● Factors affecting stability
● Motive controls
● Hydraulic controls
● Maneuvering in open and confined areas
● Order picking at different levels
● Transportation
● Stacking
● End of shift checks

Variations of the Order Picker Lift Trucks
● Pedestrian pallet, stillage, low level lift order picker (ABA Grouping A1
● Rider pallet, stillage, low level lift order picker (ABA Grouping A2)
● Medium lift order picker up to 2.5m (ABA Grouping E1)
● High lift order picker over 2.5m (ABA Grouping E2

If you have any attachments these can be included in the assessment and detailed on the training card (if required).
Each variation is classed as a separate test under the ratio requirements.

Course Requirements
A room for the theory session and a safe area for the practical session with use of the Order Picker.
The Instructor is required to see the machine/equipment’s LOLER certificate before commencement of the course.
3 palletised loads.
Attachments on site if they require these on their certification.
All to be in good working order.

Certification & Validation
This Order Picker training course can be registered with our awarding body or certificated as a Kentra card. We are a registered training provider and our cards are suitable for the HSE and insurances. Our instructor will take the candidates picture on the day of training, which will appear on their ID cards.

Candidates successfully completing this course will receive one of the following:
● Kentra Training course validation and plastic (credit card size) ID card
● NPORS registration and plastic ID card N005 Order Picker training course.
If NPORS is required we will need to notify them prior to the course, so please mention this when booking.
