Kentra can provide an Appointed Person training course (BS7121), for novice candidates through to experienced operators and the course registered by ourselves or with an awarding body if required.


Novice course: 6 Candidates: 1 Instructor: 1 Lifting Machine: 4 Days.

Refresher and Test: 6 Candidates: 1 Instructor: 1 Lifting Machine: 1 Day.

We also provide training for Slinger / Signaller and Cranage Supervisor which maybe of interest.


On completion of the course, each candidate will have a working knowledge of relevant legislation and will be conversant in producing valid risk assessments, method statements and lift plans, ensuring the safe and proper use of Mobile Cranes and other relevant Lifting Equipment

Duties of the Health & Safety Executive

Accidents Case History’s
Slinging Techniques : Weight Estimation
Inspection of Lifting Equipment
Selection and Sitting of a suitable Crane
Management and Planning of the Lifting Operation
Hazard Spotting – Risk Assessments & Method Statements
Assessment – Plan a Lifting Operation using a site plan
Method Statements & Risk Assessments relating to the above exercise

Course Requirements
A room for the theory session and a safe area for the practical session.

The trainee will be assessed throughout the course by continual assessment including a theory test and assignment.

The novice Appointed Person training course will consist of 2 theory session days, a practical session on the 3rd day where a crane will be required for the candidate to site and conduct a lift. The fourth day would be for Theory test and completion of an assignment.

The Instructor is required to see the LOLER certificate for all equipment used for the practical sessions before commencement of the course.

Certification & Validation

This course can be registered with different awarding bodies if required, or simply a Kentra card – as a registered training provider we can supply a plastic ID card as proof of training, suitable for the HSE and insurances.

If an awarding body validation is required we will need to notify them prior to the course, so please mention this when booking.
Candidates successfully completing this course will receive one of the following certifications:

Kentra validation and plastic ID card –

CPCS registration and plastic ID card

Lantra Awards registration and plastic ID card

NPORS registration and plastic ID card N401 Appointed Person training course.

Candidates with the old Appointed Person category on their NPORS card will not be offered a renewal at the expiry date. A refresher course will be required to get the category back onto their NPORS card.
