This series of short blogs is looking at the A to Z of courses we do. We are up to the middle of C’s and this blog covers the many options for Confined Spaces Training.
Confined Spaces Awareness – this is a little one day awareness course aimed towards managers and supervisors required to know the dangers but not needing the full course training to traverse a confined space.
Confined Spaces Low Risk – A low risk confined space exists where there is easy entry or exit and natural ventilation. Low risk shallow entry with adequate natural or mechanical ventilation, where access is simple and unobstructed and there is no likely risk of flooding. Eg: meter pits, valve chambers, booster-pumping stations, PRV chambers. No breathing apparatus required for low risk.
Confined Spaces Medium Risk – A medium risk confined space exists where there are access issues; a realistic expectation of encountering a specific risk; possible introduction of specified risks during the work activity. Includes emergency escape and use of breathing apparatus, together with the use of a tripod and winch.
For more details, see over on Health and Safety page .
Under UK law the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 states that employers are responsible for ensuring the safety of their employees and others. This responsibility is reinforced by regulations. Which in the case of Confined Spaces is The Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 Where the work assessment identifies risks of serious injury from a confined spaces, the regulation contain the following key duties:
- avoid entry to confined spaces, e.g. by doing the work from the outside;
- if entry to a confined space is unavoidable, follow a safe system of work; and
- put in place adequate emergency arrangements before the work start
Part of this is to ensure that your staff are adequately trained.

In addition, we have the option to register the Operator training courses i.e the Low or Medium Risk training with our Awarding Body NPORS. www.npors.com If your candidates are working offsite or on other peoples premises a recognised Awarding Body membership maybe advantageous. Prior to training we would apply to NPORS to register the course and upon successful completion of the course we would apply for the candidates 5 year membership with the NPORS scheme.
