Abrasive Wheels training and testing is designed to educate individuals on the safe operation of abrasive wheels and machinery. The training covers topics such as choosing the right wheel for the job, handling, storing, and mounting abrasive wheels, as well as potential hazards and safety precautions.

Abrasive Wheels Training

The different course options available

There are three different options for the Abrasive Wheels training courses available.

  • Abrasive Wheels Awareness course – half day for up to 6 candidates per session and we can run a morning and afternoon course. This is the basic course, with a theory session and looking at the grinding discs but no practical cutting.
  • Abrasive Wheels with Practical cutting and grinding (for Angle grinder type machines)   Full day course for up to 6 candidates.
  • Abrasive Wheels Cut off saw – this is for the larger Sthil saws, again a full day with practical session for up to 6 delegates.

Let us go into a bit more detail.

Abrasive Wheels awareness is a half day course to raise the dangers caused by abrasive wheels.

Aims and Objectives

To ensure the safe use of Abrasive Wheels, to create a safe system of work understanding the need for accident prevention and control, to enable candidates to work safely with the awareness of the dangers of abrasive wheels.

Delegate Eligibility & Entry Requirements

This course is designed for candidates of all abilities. We can assist candidates with any learning difficulties or where English may not be their first language, please mention when booking a course.

Course Duration

Half day for up to 6 Candidates : 1 Instructor
This course does not including a practical cutting & grinding session.

Course Content
  • Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER 1998 and other relevant legislation
  • Safety Awareness session
  • Pre start checks on differing machines
  • Inspection of grinding wheels & discs

Abrasive Wheels with practical cutting and grinding.

A full day course, covers the use of small Abrasive Wheels such as Angle Grinders.   Same as the above awareness but including a practical session in the afternoon.

Variations

There are a number of different variations of wheels and discs that can be covered including

  • Straight sided wheels Tapered wheels
  • Bonded abrasive discs Cylinder wheels
  • Cup Wheels Cone Wheels
  • Depressed centre wheels Cutting off wheels
  • Diamond tipped

Abrasive Wheels – Hand Held Cut Off Saw

A full day course, again including the practical session – for the operation of larger petrol driven cut off saws, the Stihl saw type.

Including practical session with the cut off saw

Abrasive Wheels Training

Course Content
  • Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, PUWER 1998 and other relevant legislation
  • Safety Awareness session
  • Pre start checks on differing machines
  • Inspection of cut off discs
  • Performing various controlled cuts including using a cutter trolley
  • Changing cutting discs and refueling

If you have any attachments these can be included in the assessment and detailed on the training
card (if required).

Training and Testing

All our courses can be registered with NPORS.   They consist of a theory session, which for novice courses include full training and presentation.  Refresher and test courses are just a recap of training any changes in legislation or updates on new regulations etc.
