We specialise in providing a number of different Working at Height courses including this Mobile Elevated Work Platform, officially called a N109 MEWP Scissor Lift which is delivered using a mixture of both classroom based tutorial and practical machine operating, testing and a final course assessment.
Aims and Objectives
To provide the practical skills and the operating safety knowledge necessary for operators to correctly prepare, safely operate and maintain a MEWP Scissor Lift.
Delegate Eligibility – Entry Requirements
This course is designed for candidates of all abilities. We can assist candidates with any learning difficulties or where English may not be their first language, please mention when booking a course.
Course Duration
There are 3 levels of experience
- Novice: Where full training is required. 4 Candidates: 1 Machine: 1 Instructor: Duration 1 Day
- Refresher and Test: Where candidates require refresher training and may need some remedial tuition. 4 Candidates: 1 Machine: 1 Instructor: 1 Day
- Experienced Worker Test (EWT): This is just testing only 6 Candidates: 1 Machine: 1 Instructor: 1 Day
- EWT’s are also applicable for a special combination of tests – a 3 + 3 Combination. i.e. 3 tests on a Boom & 3 tests on a Scissor in one day by the same instructor. Alternatively any mixture of the MEWP variations up to a maximum of 6 tests per day.
Test timings : Each candidates full practical test must be completed within a 1 hour duration.

- Responsibilities under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and other relevant legislation and guidelines.
- Safety Awareness Session
- Pre-shift checks and daily maintenance

- Manoeuvring
- Elevating
- Checking ground conditions
- Travelling to work area and machine setup
- End of shift
Variations
- 1A Static Vertical – Driven into position and cannot drive elevated
- 3A Mobile Vertical – Can drive elevated
Each variation is classed as a separate test under the ratio requirements.
Learning Outcomes
- Have a basic understanding of the dangers and their responsibilities as an operator
- Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
- Be able to locate and identify steering, driving and braking controls and explain their functions
- Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturers and legislative requirements
- Check all emergency lowering functions
- Safely mount and dismount the machine
- Configure the machine for travel
- Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely on level ground and inclines in open and confined areas
- Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area, including overhead and underground hazards
- Manoeuvre the machine to the work area and correctly configure in readiness to carry out accessing tasks
- Carry out accessing tasks, at various points up to full operating height
- Travel with platform raised (where applicable)
- Use platform extension section
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation
- Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures
Certification & Validation
This course can be registered with our awarding body NPORS or accredited by us Kentra Training. We are a registered training provider and our cards are suitable for the HSE and insurances. Registration with NPORS can be with either the standard 5 year traditional card or with a NPORS CSCS Construction Plant Operator Card.

New Entrant – No (S)NVQ Held (2 year – Red Card)
Once successfully tested operators who do not hold the requisite Excavator NVQ will be issued with a Trained Operator card valid for 2 years from the date they were tested. During the two year period they will be required to register for and achieve the requisite (S)NVQ.
On successful completion of this process a Competent Operator card will be issued valid for 5 years from the date of application. A CPD record / operator logbook will also be issued.
New Entrant – (S)NVQ Held (5 year – Blue Card)
Once successfully tested operators who do currently hold the requisite (S)NVQ will be issued with a Competent Operator card valid for 5 years from the date they were tested. Operators in receipt of the Competent Operator card will also be issued with a CPD record & operator logbook. This will be an ongoing record of the operators continuous professional development and of their operating hours in the workplace.
Please note that in all cases for a NPORS CSCS card, operators will have to supply proof that they have passed the CITB health, safety & environmental touch screen test within two years.
So candidates successfully completing this course will receive one of the following:
- Kentra Training course validation and plastic (credit card size) ID card
- NPORS traditional registration and plastic ID card N109 MEWP Scissor Lift
- NPORS CSCS registration and plastic ID card C109 MEWP Scissor Lift
2 year Red card – No NVQ
5 year Blue card – if you hold a NVQ for Excavations
If NPORS is required we will need to notify them prior to the course, so please mention this when booking.
Our instructor will take the candidates picture on the day of training, which will appear on their ID cards.

Legality
According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) ‘All people using equipment at work must be adequately trained to ensure health and safety in its use, supervision or management. … People should be competent for the work they undertake. Training – along with knowledge, experience and skill – helps develop such competence. However, competence may (in some cases) necessarily include medical fitness and physical, mental aptitude for the activity.’
Specifications – requirements for the course
- The MEWP must have a platform height of at least 4 metres
- The maximum clearance for the restriction should be the width of the MEWP Scissor plus 500mm
- Travel distance with the boom raised must be at least 10m
Course Requirements
This course can be delivered on-site where we come to you and use your equipment, alternatively you can come to us and we will provide everything you need for the course.
On-site Course Requirements
You will need:
- A room for the theory session.
- A safe area for the practical session with use of the MEWP Scissor Lift
- The Instructor is required to see the machine/equipment’s LOLER certificate before commencement of the course.
- All equipment to be in good working order.
- Candidates will need to know their own date of birth and National Insurance number.
Training Centre Course Requirements
For courses conducted at our training centre, in Middlewich we provide all the equipment, tools and supplies required to conduct the course.
- Delegates will need to be suitably dressed to use the equipment, including safety boots or steel toe-capped boots.
- Candidates will need to know their own date of birth and National Insurance number.
Courses at our training centre can be run as open training programmes, meaning that if you only have one or two candidates, you can join a course with other delegates on a mutually convenient day.
