NPORS Abrasive Wheels
As many of you know Kentra Training was established in 1997 by Norman Kennish. Straight away the company registered with NPORS as a training provider. Our registration is number 66 and we are now one of the longest serving TP’s with them, delivering nearly 100 different training courses, including our own unique NPORS Small Plant and Portable Tools course and also the NPORS Abrasive Wheels, which is what this blog is about.
NPORS have three different courses available for the Abrasive Wheels Training.
- Abrasive Wheels Awareness course – half day for up to 6 candidates per session and we can run a morning and an afternoon course. This is the basic course, with a theory session involving looking at the grinding discs but no practical cutting.
- Abrasive Wheels with Practical cutting and grinding (for Angle grinder type machines) Full day course for up to 6 candidates.
- Abrasive Wheels Cut off saw – this is for the larger Stihl saws, again a full day with practical session for up to 6 delegates.
Each of the course titles above are linked to our other blogs each covering the individual course syllabuses. If your candidates use angle grinders and cut off saws, there is an option on the N301 Abrasive Wheels course to cover these, but it will not be shown separately on your NPORS card. However the candidates can do both tests via the combination route (1 day for 3 delegates on both machines = 6 tests in the day, for 1 instructor)
More details of the different Abrasive Wheels courses was documented on our blog Abrasive Wheels – our A 2 Z of Safety Training, which covers the ratios, training locations etc. and lots more information.
The purpose of our NPORS Abrasive Wheels training is to give advice on precautions for the prevention of accidents in the use of abrasive wheels, in particular injury resulting from either wheel breakage or contact with a running wheel.
The risk of breakage is inherent in every abrasive wheel. If the number of breakages is to be kept low, the initial care exercised in the design, manufacture
and testing by abrasive wheel and machine makers must be coupled with the adoption of safety measures by the operator. Accident statistics indicate that nearly
half of all accidents involving abrasive wheels are due to an unsafe system of work or operator error.
Certification & Validation
Any of the Abrasive Wheels courses can be registered with our awarding body NPORS or accredited by us Kentra Training. We are a registered training provider and our cards are suitable for the HSE and insurances. Candidates successfully completing this course will receive one of the following:
- Kentra Training course validation and plastic (credit card size) ID card
- NPORS registration and plastic ID card for one of the following courses
N301 Abrasive Wheels with practical cutting and grinding
N301A Abrasive Wheels Awareness
N017 Abrasive Wheels – Hand held cut off saw
If NPORS is required we will need to notify them prior to the course, so please mention this when booking.
Our instructor will take the candidates pictures on the day of training, which will appear on their ID cards.
