Lots of S’s to get through for our series of short blogs looking at the A to Z of courses we do. Today we are midway through looks a Slinger Signaller training.
The slinger signaller is the person responsible for attaching and detaching the load to and from the lifting equipment. They must ensure the correct use of lifting accessories and equipment in accordance with the operation plan and for initiating and directing the safe movement of the lifting equipment and load, according to all relevant lifting rules and regulations.
We cover all aspects of training from Novice operators, candidates who need refresher training to experienced workers, just requiring an assessment.
Course ratios – Slinger Signaller
The course durations, training and testing ratios are
Novices : 1 – 2 days 3 Delegates
Refresher & Test : 1 day, up to 3 delegates
Experienced Worker Tests (EWT) : 1 day for up to 6 delegates.

Accreditation
Upon successful completion of the course the candidates will received a Kentra Training ID card (credit card size) detailing the course completed.
In addition, we have the option to register the training with our Awarding Body NPORS. www.npors.com If your candidates are working offsite or on other peoples premises a recognised Awarding Body membership maybe advantageous. Prior to training we would apply to NPORS to register the course and upon successful completion of the course we would apply for the candidates 5 year membership with the NPORS scheme.

Training locations
At Kentra we have always provided on-site training, coming to you and delivering the training in your own space using the equipment you are used to using.
Slinger signaller course
Variations of Slinger / signaller include: Wheeled Mobile, Lorry Mounted, Tower Crane, Crawler Crane, Overhead Crane, Lorry Loader, Side Boom or Excavator
Each variation is a separate test, per candidate. If you use more than one, please contact the office.
- A room for the theory session
- A safe area for the practical session, with use of one of the variations of lifting equipment as above.
- The learner must identify 1 serviceable and 2 unserviceable lifting accessories. i.e. webbing sling, wire rope, lifting chains and / or shackles.
- The learner must identify 2 lifting equipment / accessory certifications that do not meet current legislation and one that does.
- Representative loads, candidates are required to sling 3 loads.
- Load one must be balanced
- Load two must be unbalanced
- Load three must consist of tubes (or similar) no less than 4 m in length
- When lifting these loads 2 different types of lifting accessories must be used. i.e. chain sling, webbing sling, wire rope, D shackle, bow shackle etc.
- The weight of all loads must be known and clearly marked.
- Test area must be appropriate for the tasks, clear of hazards with an agreed exclusion zone.
- Lifting machine operator must be adequately trained.
- Both radio communications and hand signals must be used for Load 1 (balanced load lifted to a designated out of sight position). Hand signals to conform to BS7121.
- A guide / tag line must be of sufficient length, free of knots and in good condition.
- Delegates to provide their own PPE.
- All machinery and equipment to be in good working order and serviceable.
- LOLER certification required.
- Attachments can be covered on this course and detailed on your training ID card.
- Candidates will need to know their Date of Birth and National Insurance number, together with a contact telephone number and email address – These are identifying factors and will never be used for marketing purposes.
