Starting with A’s we are up to Appointed Person (BS7121), in this series of short blogs is looking at the A to Z of training courses we do.
The NPORS N401 Appointed Person course is probably the most in-depth course that we teach.
Appointed Person’s are in charge of all lifting operations and have sole responsibility for all the lifts taking place. Any lifting operation can put people at great risk of injury, as well as incurring great costs if they go wrong (as well as news headlines, if a crane collapses). It is therefore important to properly resource, plan and organise lifting operations so they are carried out in a safe manner.
Steps to become an Appointed person
Ideally you would work up to the role of an Appointed person, as hands on work experience knowledge is going to be essential in your position.
Most candidates start as a Slinger – signaller, before progressing to a Crane Lift supervisor, then finally the Appointed person role. (These course names in this sentence will link you to the relevant course syllabuses for more details on each training opportunity).
If you think you are ready, NPORS has prepared an Appointed Person Self Profile form – so lets give it a try.
Course ratios – Appointed Person
The course durations, training and testing ratios for the NPORS N401 are
Novice : 5 days for up to 6 delegates
Novice candidates will require the use of a crane on day 4 of the training to do a practical assessment, siteing the crane.
Refresher and Test : 1 day for up to 6 candidates (Refresher candidates will need evidence of prior training)
Accreditation
Upon successful completion of the course the candidates will received a Kentra Training ID card (credit card size) detailing the course completed.
In addition, we have the option to register the training with our Awarding Body NPORS. www.npors.com If your candidates are working offsite or on other peoples premises a recognised Awarding Body membership maybe advantageous. Prior to training we would apply to NPORS to register the course and upon successful completion of the course we would apply for the candidates 5 year membership with the NPORS scheme.
Training locations
At Kentra we have always provided on-site training, coming to you and delivering the training in your own space. On-site training is available for all the Appointed person courses, and essential for the novice crane siteing element of the course.
To provide an alternative we opened our Training Centre in October 2018, and have achieved NPORS accreditation, meaning that you can come to us for refresher training.
