The pathway to becoming an Appointed Person
There are a few levels to work through to become a good crane Appointed Person
- Slinger signaller. Understanding the basics and being a slinger or crane operator is the first step of training.
- Crane Lift Supervisor. The next level is to become a Crane Lift Supervisor, responsible for the management and safety of everyone working on the site in and around the lift operation. They need to direct and supervise lifting operations to ensure they are carried out in accordance with the method statement.
- Appointed Person. Finally you are ready to step up to become an Appointed Person.
The Appointed Person takes responsibility for;
- The planning of the operation;
- The selection, provision and use of a suitable crane and work equipment
- Any necessary preparation of a site and erection and dismantling of the crane
- Maintenance, examination and where necessary testing of the crane and equipment
- The provision of properly trained and competent personnel who have been made aware of their relevant responsibilities under the relevant legislation.
- Ensuring that all necessary reports of thorough examination and other documents are available
- Preventing unauthorised movement or use at all times
- The safety of persons not involved in the installation or lifting operation
- Ensuring that the safe system of work is communicated to all parties concerned.

Training and Testing
All the NPORS courses consist of a theory session, which for novice courses include full training and presentation. Refresher and test courses are just a recap of training, any changes in legislation, or updates on new regulations etc. whereas Experienced Workers Tests are straight into the theory test consisting of 5 questions to answer in full and 20 multiple choice. The theory test required pass mark is 80% for both the slinger and crane lift supervisor.
We’re not joking when we say the Appointed Person course is the most in-depth course we deliver. Its a 5 day novice course, heavy going through the week. With 30 questions to answer on the theory paper and siting a crane practical for novice candidates. NPORS have devised a student self profile form, to give you an idea of the level of competency required prior to starting this course.
