We specialise in providing on-site training for this N010 Telescopic Handler course, which is delivered using a mixture of both classroom based tutorial and practical machine operating, testing and a final course assessment.
Aims and Objectives
To provide the practical skills and the operating safety knowledge necessary for operators to correctly prepare, safely operate and maintain a Telescopic Handler.

This course is designed for candidates of all abilities. We can assist candidates with any learning difficulties or where English may not be their first language, please mention when booking a course.
Course Duration
There are 3 levels of experience
- Novice: Where full training is required. 3 Candidates: 1 Machine: 1 Instructor: Duration 1-5 days
- Refresher and Test: Where candidates require refresher training and may need some remedial tuition. 3 Candidates: 1 Machine: 1 Instructor: 1 Day
- Experienced Worker Test (EWT): This is just testing only 4 Candidates: 1 Machine: 1 Instructor: 1 Day
Under-slung loads are now tested as a separate category, the ‘Bolt on’ Suspended loads course is also available with NPORS registration.
If you carry any loads below your forks the suspended loads – underslung loads course will also be required.

Variations of the Tele Handler
- Telehandler Rough terrain variable reach lift trucks – up to 9 metre lift (ABA Grouping – J2)
- Telehandler Rough terrain high lift – above 9 metre lift (ABA Grouping – J3)
- Telehandler Industrial variable reach lift truck – up to 9 metre lift (ABA grouping – J4)
- Telehandler Industrial high lift – above 9 metre lift (ABA grouping – J5)
- Telehandler variable reach including 360 slew – under 9m (ABA Grouping – J6)
- Telehandler variable reach including 360 slew – over 9m (ABA Grouping – J7)
- Articulated Rough Terrain Telehandler Lift Truck (ABA Grouping – J8)
If you have any attachments these can be included in the assessment and detailed on the training card (if required).
Each variation is classed as a separate test under the ratio requirements, a machine of over 9 metre boom length or 360 slew is required in order to attain these accreditation.
Learning Outcomes
- Have a basic understanding of the dangers and their responsibilities as a Lift Truck operator
- Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
- Be able to locate and identify steering, driving and braking controls and explain their functions
- Conduct all pre-operational checks
- Safely mount and dismount the machine
- Start and stop the engine and safely move the machine off and stop it safely
- Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely laden and unladen, over varying terrains, rough ground, inclines, in open and confined spaces
- Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
- Manoeuvre the machine to the work area and correctly configure in readiness to carry our lifting and load handling tasks
- Carry out lifting and load handling tasks
- Lift and transfer loads accurately and safely at different locations
- Load and unload external transport safely
- Fit, adjust and or remove attachments
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation
- Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures
Certification & Validation
This course can be registered with our awarding body NPORS or accredited by us Kentra Training. We are a registered training provider and our cards are suitable for the HSE and insurances. Registration with NPORS can be with either the standard 5 year traditional card or with a NPORS CSCS Construction Plant Operator Card.

New Entrant – No (S)NVQ Held (2 year – Red Card)
Once successfully tested operators who do not hold the requisite Telehandler NVQ will be issued with a Trained Operator card valid for 2 years from the date they were tested. During the two year period they will be required to register for and achieve the requisite (S)NVQ.
On successful completion of this process a Competent Operator card will be issued valid for 5 years from the date of application. A CPD record – operator logbook will also be issued.
New Entrant – (S)NVQ Held (5 year – Blue Card)
Once successfully tested operators who do currently hold the requisite (S)NVQ will be issued with a Competent Operator card valid for 5 years from the date they were tested. Operators in receipt of the Competent Operator card will also be issued with a CPD record – operator logbook. This will be an ongoing record of the operators continuous professional development and of their operating hours in the workplace.
Please note that in all cases for a NPORS CSCS card, operators will have to supply proof that they have passed the CITB health, safety & environmental touch screen test within two years.
So candidates successfully completing this course will receive one of the following:
- Kentra Training course validation and plastic (credit card size) ID card
- NPORS traditional registration and plastic ID card N010 Telescopic Handler
- NPORS/CSCS registration and plastic ID card C010 Telescopic Handler
2 year Red card – No NVQ
5 year Blue card – if you hold a NVQ for Excavations
If NPORS is required we will need to notify them prior to the course, so please mention this when booking.
Our instructor will take the candidates picture on the day of training, which will appear on their ID cards.
Specifications – requirements for the course
- Three Loads
Load A – 1 x load not less than 50% of the trucks rated capacity
Load B – 3 x equal dimensions suitable for stacking
Load C – 1 x load of a weight less than the trucks lift capacity at full horizontal reach
- Lorry Bed : Equipped with headboard. (This maybe simulated is a lorry is unavailable using the same dimensions, including bed, ground height).
- Loading out tower : 75% or more of the trucks maximum lift height and able to safely support load A
- Area or Terrain : Level ground, rough or uneven ground, a slope not less than 18% (1:5:5) incline with enough manoeuvring area at both bottom and top, a straight of at least 20 meters.
On-site Course Requirements
- A room for the theory session and a safe area for the practical session with use of the Telehandler.
- The Instructor is required to see the machine/equipment’s LOLER certificate before commencement of the course.
- 3 palletised loads – as detailed above.
- Racking, scaffolding, loading out tower at least 75% of the machine’s maximum lifting height.
- External Transport such as Lorry, Van, Trailer etc if assessment on loading and unloading if applicable.
- Attachments on site if they require these on their certification.
- All to be in good working order.
- Candidates will need to know their date of birth and National Insurance number
